Receiving Shed/Caretaker’s Building

1873
Artistic Feature
Location: Joy Place

The one-story, rectangular brick "Receiving Shed" was built in 1873 with an asphalt roof, two windows, a 6/6 sash, and a large, wood-panel double door. It has a stepped brick foundation that forms a continuous cornice. The Receiving Shed's foundation, quoins, lintels, and sills are made of rock-faced gray granite, and its gable roof has a ridge with iron cresting. Inside the single room are six compartments that once held the caskets of the deceased pending burial. The compartments were helpful during the winter months when the ground was frozen and difficult to dig. In 1970, the Receiving Shed was converted into a Caretaker's Building to store landscaping and maintenance equipment.
