During the Victorian era, death was often treated sentimentally, especially in the case of children's graves. By the early 1800s, marble became widely available locally, and its ease of detailed carving allowed for more intricate designs. The most commonly used motifs were lambs, which symbolized purity and innocence. Children "at rest" in a bed were also popular. These marble gravestones were a reflection of the Victorian era's attitude towards death and mourning.
