9. Bethiah "Resolution" Nichols Tower
1724–1813
Military, Government/Civic Leader
Location: OS4 near Plot 380
Bethiah "Resolution" Nichols Tower, a resident of King Street, was nicknamed "Resolution". Her daughter, Persis Tower, was a Revolutionary heroine. Resolution was a brave woman who oversaw the Cohasset Smallpox Hospital, located near Mohawk Way and Beach Street. The town established the hospital after a smallpox outbreak during the summer of 1778. During the Revolutionary War, Resolution ensured that the town's corn was well-maintained with water that she carted in barrels from Lily Pond. Her extraordinary farming practices were admired by many.
