Nichols’ monument has a 4000-pound granite ball that is a scientific phenomenon. Facing north the ball has rotated in its original "base" and turned upward due to alternating temperatures, weather, and gravity. There are many theories as to how this happens dating back to 1919. One includes that water under the ball freezes and the expansion lifts the ball and rotates it.
