61. Daniel T. Lothrop
1796–1871
Seafaring, Artistic Feature
Location: Plot 212
Lothrop was a prominent figure who commanded several ships, including the schooner Three Sisters which was built in Cohasset. Later he shifted his focus to business and became one of the most active, and public-spirited citizens in town. In the mid-1800s, Lothrop created a list of past noteworthy shipwrecks in the area. Based on this list, Minot's Ledge was selected as the suitable location for the new lighthouse in 1848, as it was the outermost visible hazard among the Cohasset Rocks, which had been known to pose a danger to mariners for many years. In 2012, the cast iron twig and branch fencing around his plot was restored.
