5. Reverend Nehemiah Hobart

1697–1740
Government/Civic Leader
Location: OS4 near Plot 351

Reverend Hobart was born in Hingham on April 27, 1697. He graduated from Harvard College in 1714 and went on to teach school in Eastham, Massachusetts. During his time, he studied for the ministry under Samuel Treat, whose pulpit he sometimes occupied. Upon the death of Reverend Treat, he was invited to succeed him but declined. Instead, he served for 19 years as the first ordained pastor of the Church of Hingham, Second Precinct, until his death on May 31, 1740.

Hobart lived near the meeting house on the west side of the Cohasset Common. In his diary, he wrote, “Raised my house October 15, 1722. I came to Dwell in my House, January 20, 1724–5.” His three successors in the ministry occupied the house until 1908. In 1770, Cohasset became incorporated as a separate town from Hingham, so the church became known as the First Parish of Cohasset.
