Lawrence Barrett was a renowned American tragedian during the Victorian era. He traveled extensively throughout the United States and London during his forty-year career and was widely acclaimed for his Shakespearean interpretations. He served as a Captain in the 28th Massachusetts Regiment during the Civil War from 1861 to 1862. In Cohasset, Barrett constructed the "Villa Marie" mansion on Margin Street, which was later renamed as "The Oaks" by its new owner, Clarence Barron, who was also the President of Dow Jones.
