Monuments combining marble and granite became possible after the discovery of marble in Vermont (1790's) and granite in nearby West Quincy (1840's). Jenkins’ granite base is topped by a marble shaft on which stands the full-sized marble figure of an anguished woman with her hand resting on an anchor. His father was a master mariner, which may indicate why the statue features an anchor, a symbol of faith, steadfastness, and hope in the Christian tradition.
