34. Ezra Towle

1804–1872
Seafaring, Industry
Location: Plot 504

At the age of 14, Ezra Towle moved from New Hampshire to Cohasset. He sailed for three summers on various fishing vessels. He studied navigation and mathematics with various Cohasset captains and completed his education in Boston. Towle served as the captain of many ships on the Liverpool Packet service. After leaving the sea, he worked as a contractor in Cohasset. He managed a line of stagecoaches that traveled between the Hingham and Nantasket boats. Despite an unfortunate accident that caused the loss of his left hand and crippled his right, Towle remained actively engaged in various businesses. One of his notable accomplishments was creating the outlet at Cunningham Bridge that connects Little Harbor with the ocean. It was initially pastureland that became the larger Little Harbor thanks to Towle's enterprise.
