Dr. Oliver Howe established his Cohasset medical practice in 1887 and was active in the Cohasset community. He served as president of the Sandy Beach Association, president of the Trustees of the Cohasset Free Public Library, founder and first president of the Cohasset Historical Society, senior deacon and treasurer of the Second Congregational Church, board clerk of the Cohasset Savings Bank, and school physician. Beyond Cohasset, Howe held office in the Norfolk South District Medico-Legal Society, served as a medical examiner for the Selective Service Board during World War I, and founded the South Shore Nature Club. He published scholarly works in history, medicine, botany, geology, and town planning, many of which brought him local and national recognition.
