1889–1918
Military
Location: Plot 65

George Mealy grew up at 39 Beechwood Street in a large Victorian home that is now a condominium. He was a sergeant in the U.S. Army "Yankee Division" and was killed in France during World War I. In tribute to the first Cohasset man killed during this war, the local American Legion Post was named George H. Mealy Post #118, and the memorial square at the intersection of South Main and Elm Streets was created in his honor. In September 1931, Cohasset American Legion Post Commander Nathaniel Hurwitz, Joseph Barrow, Frank Migliaccio, and the Pond Plain Band of Weymouth traveled to Belleau Wood, France, to visit his gravesite and pay their respects. The group placed wreaths and soil from Cohasset over his grave.
