31. Thomas W. Clarke

1834–1895
Military, Government/Civic Leader
Location: Plot 405

Clarke graduated from Harvard University in 1855 and Harvard Law in 1858. He joined the Army in 1861 and rose in rank from Captain to Colonel. After being honorably discharged in 1865, he became a Boston attorney specializing in patent, copyright, and trademark cases. In his free time, he researched the history of his town and shared his findings with the Cohasset Historical Society. Clarke's likeness was used by the sculptor Martin Milmore in the "Soldiers and Sailors Monument," a significant Civil War memorial in Boston Common. The monument, which stands at a towering 70 feet tall, has become a model for similar memorials across the country. It features nine statues, with Clarke being depicted as a soldier.
