23. Captain George Hall

23. Captain George Hall

1791–1854
Seafaring
Location: Plot 333

Captain Hall was a true hero. He fought in the War of 1812 and rescued shipwrecked sailors off Cohasset Rocks in 1815. Even in the Mediterranean, Hall, a master mariner, escaped a fearful fate when pirates captured him. The pirates intended to strip the vessel and set it adrift. By luck, both Hall and the pirate captain were Masons. This affiliation changed the trajectory of affairs, and Hall was released. By 1828, Hall oversaw a packet boat between Cohasset and Boston.

Hall was a member of the Society of the Cincinnati, a recognition descended from his father, James. Hall’s legacy continued with his eight sons and seven daughters, some of whom became sailors and shipbuilders. His bravery and dedication earned him the respect of his peers, and he was recognized for saving the sailors by the Massachusetts Humane Society.

In 2023, the cemetery restored the cast iron fencing, utilizing the original 1854 gate. Pieces of the original fencing were used to recast and fabricate additional fence sections.
